About Us

Founded at Grand Valley State University on January 19, 2013 the Sigma-Kappa chapter provides brothers an opportunity to continue growing the fraternity by becoming actively involved, allowing our members to demonstrate diligence and commitment in working to become the best. Perseverance guides all Kappa Sigmas to become a well-rounded individual in all aspects of life. It is our goal that those seeking membership to our chapter will ultimately become a better man through the opportunities that we provide to our members. By adhering to the four pillars of Kappa Sigma, these aspirations become possible for all who demonstrate such values in his life while being an active member of our organization.

Our organization prides itself in developing leaders not only within Kappa Sigma but also in the campus community here at Grand Valley. By striving to become the best, our members understand the necessary commitment that must be demonstrated in order to excel following graduation. Leadership development opportunities appear in many forms of everyday life within the Sigma-Kappa chapter. At a local level, members are encouraged to participate actively on committee boards or even serve as an officer if they choose to do so. Furthermore, our chapter asks that each member choosing to stay actively involved in Kappa Sigma must also participate in an outside campus organization to strengthen the value of leadership in our fraternity and campus. Nationally, Kappa Sigma further expands upon member's leadership development by providing all members opportunities  to attend seminars at events such as Grand Conclave, Leadership Convention, and many other district or regional conventions.

The creation of lifelong friendships is a primary benefit of Fraternity membership. Kappa Sigma fulfills the need of students to belong to an extended family and frequently provides the opportunity to enhance those personal relationships through group living situations. As Brothers, we have an obligation to have a caring concern for the well-being of our members. Brotherhood is a lifetime commitment; therefore, we should encourage strong alumni-undergraduate relationships for the mutual benefit of the students and the alumni. Integrity and honesty guide member's desire to care for one-another. Our brotherhood is a pillar of which every member may lean on when they are down or stand from to excel in situations past their personal expectations.

Kappa Sigma helps you excel in the classroom. From its earliest beginnings in Renaissance Italy, Kappa Sigma has existed to promote scholarship among its members. Nearly $300,000 is awarded each year by the Kappa Sigma Endowment Fund to Brothers who excel in scholarship and leadership. At the chapter level, Brothers help you learn about the campus, provide advice on professors and classes and help make your experience as a student at Grand Valley the best it can be. We, as Kappa Sigma's are dedicated to the betterment of our own education first and foremost. That is why we provide study table opportunities, 1-on-1 tutoring from brothers who have excelled in the classroom, or guidance on professors, classes, and work.

Kappa Sigma is committed to making a difference in the lives of others. It is this commitment that has provided the inspiration and vision for A Greater Cause – the Fraternity’s bold initiative to promote volunteerism, citizenship and service to the community. During the 2011-2013 biennium, Kappa Sigma members raised more than $3.6 million for charity and volunteered nearly 1.1 million hours of community service as part of the initiative. Our national philanthropy is the Military Hero's Campaign which is a charity that works to benefit military veterans and their families in communities across the United States. Locally, our brothers are required to engage in 35 or more hours of community service that benefits the local community. Members are also encouraged to participate in fundraising opportunities of which raises money to be donated to philanthropy.
